Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to care for his flock of rams.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes among the single tree on the mountaintop were his constant companions. Day upon day, guarding his wards instilled in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.
Tales of predators hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but found no wolf.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed check here to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is tough to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
